The Light Begins Before It Becomes Visible

There is a moment before sunrise when the landscape is still dim, but we can already see a little farther.

The sky softens.

The landscape begins to come into view, but the sun has not yet crossed the horizon.

I find this interesting — how easily we recognize that movement in nature, yet sometimes overlook it in our own lives.

We may notice something small. A familiar situation feels different. We have more room to choose. Something that once occupied our whole attention no longer does.

And then we look around.

The circumstances may look much the same. There may be no announcement, no finished result, no obvious evidence to point to.

But the difference we noticed still belongs to our experience.

I am learning to give those moments room.

Sometimes I recognize a change in what I no longer feel compelled to do. I can leave a question open. Enjoy something without immediately making it useful. Let a quiet moment be quiet.

The ordinary, every day experices matter to me.

Dawn offers a way to understand this without forcing a conclusion.

We can notice the light that is here while allowing the rest of the landscape to come into view.

We do not have to call the whole day from that first brightness.

Perhaps today there is simply a little more space.

A little more ease.

Something we can see that we could not see before.

That is enough to notice.
